Keene State Jazz Combos to bring an evening of improvisation and musical variety to Redfern Arts Center

From traditional jazz standards to contemporary musical influences, student musicians at Keene State College are preparing to showcase their creativity and collaborative talents during an upcoming performance at the Redfern Arts Center. The Keene State Jazz Combos will take the stage Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. in the college's Alumni Recital Hall, offering an evening of live music that blends jazz traditions with elements of popular, classical and original compositions. The concert will feature two groups of student musicians, each bringing different musical backgrounds, experiences and influences to the stage. Unlike larger jazz orchestras, which often rely on structured arrangements and coordinated sections of musicians, smaller jazz combos allow performers greater flexibility to explore their individual musical styles. Improvisation, communication and collaboration play central roles, creating opportunities for musicians to interpret familiar compositions in new ways. The upcoming concert reflects Keene State's broader commitment to providing students with opportunities to develop their musical abilities through live performance. According to the college's Music Department, Jazz Combos bring together students from a variety of academic majors, personal backgrounds and musical experiences. The musicians gather on Fridays to rehearse, learn new material and develop their skills in improvisational music. These regular sessions provide an opportunity for students to strengthen their technical abilities while learning to respond to one another in a musical setting. The groups explore traditional jazz structures and repertoire while incorporating influences ranging from popular music to classical compositions and original material. That combination allows students to draw on their individual interests while working together to create a cohesive performance. The program is directed by Steve Cady, an accomplished bassist and longtime jazz educator who also leads Keene State's larger Jazz Ensemble. Cady, a Keene resident, has spent much of his musical career performing throughout New England and working with both professional and student musicians. His experience includes appearances at the Montreal Jazz Festival and performances with the Scott Mullett Trio, along with work at regional jazz venues. He is also a founding member and director of the Keene Jazz Orchestra, further connecting the college's music program with the region's jazz community. Through his work at Keene State, Cady helps students explore both the technical foundations of jazz and the creative possibilities that make the genre distinctive. The college's jazz program emphasizes improvisation, ensemble performance and collaboration while encouraging students to draw from a variety of musical influences. Participation in the college's musical ensembles is not limited to students pursuing music degrees. Keene State allows students from across academic disciplines to become involved in its performing groups, creating opportunities for musicians with different educational interests to collaborate. That accessibility is part of what makes the Jazz Combos distinctive. Students who may be preparing for careers outside the music industry can still pursue their passion for performance and contribute to the college's artistic community. Beyond their educational significance, the concerts also provide residents of Keene and the surrounding Monadnock Region with opportunities to experience live jazz performed by emerging musicians. The performances offer a setting in which audiences can hear students apply the skills they have developed throughout the semester, while gaining experience performing before a public audience. For those unfamiliar with jazz, small-combo performances can introduce the genre's improvisational character. Rather than relying exclusively on predetermined musical arrangements, jazz musicians frequently build on familiar melodies, develop individual solos and introduce variations that reflect their personal styles. This approach gives performers an opportunity to express their creativity while maintaining a shared musical direction. The genre itself has a long history of blending musical traditions. Emerging from Black American musical communities around the turn of the 20th century, jazz developed through influences including blues, ragtime and other forms of American music. Over time, styles such as swing, bebop, cool jazz, fusion and contemporary jazz expanded the possibilities for instrumentation, improvisation and composition. That evolving musical tradition remains central to jazz education, where students are encouraged to study established works while developing their own approaches to performance. Keene State's upcoming concert will highlight that balance between tradition and experimentation, with student performers drawing on both established jazz repertoire and their diverse musical interests. The Oct. 30 concert is among several music performances scheduled at the Redfern Arts Center this fall. The college's Jazz Ensemble is also scheduled to perform Dec. 9, providing another opportunity for audiences to hear student musicians in a larger ensemble setting. For the musicians participating in Jazz Combos, Friday's performance will serve as an opportunity to share their work with the community and demonstrate the collaborative skills that are central to jazz. And for local audiences, the concert offers a chance to experience live music shaped not only by rehearsals and preparation, but also by the creativity and spontaneity that make jazz an enduring art form.
