Five folk concerts to close out the year

As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, the Peterborough Folk Music Society has an exciting lineup of concerts planned for the remainder of the year. For founder and director Deborah McWethy, keeping the music going is a labor of love — and she wouldn't have it any other way. Since 1996, the all-volunteer nonprofit organization has been bringing innovative, entertaining and diverse musicians to the region. Its roots go back to Peterborough's well-known Folkway coffeehouse. After the venue's owner passed away, a board of directors took over its operation, but the arrangement wasn't working. McWethy, who served on the board, wasn't ready to see the music and community disappear. Instead, she decided to start the Peterborough Folk Music Society, ensuring live folk music would continue to have a home in the region. Thirty years later, McWethy credits the organization's longevity to the volunteers, supporters and local business partners who have helped it thrive. The society is also welcoming a new board member, Paul Allen-Webber, director of advancement – major and planned giving at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge. Allen-Webber has played an important role in this year's annual fund drive, and McWethy said they are excited to have him officially on board. Community partnerships are another important part of the society's success. Harlow's Pub and Restaurant in Peterborough donates meals for visiting musicians, while River House in Peterborough provides lodging whenever possible. McWethy also recognized the contributions of the society's dedicated board members, whose efforts have helped guide the organization through three decades of concerts. "Along with the support of local businesses, we were very fortunate for the support from the Bessie Foundation, our benefactor. They support us and have been very generously for the past four years. Monadnock Center has granted us permission (store a stage) at Bass Hall and the Bessie Foundation has gotten us that stage," said McWethy. "We are very fortunate." With that community support behind it, the society is looking forward to finishing its anniversary year with a diverse lineup of returning favorites and special performances. Here's a look at what's coming up. Upcoming Concerts Saturday, Oct. 24: The Steel Wheels The Virginia-based folk-rock band The Steel Wheels returns to the Peterborough Folk Music stage for a performance at 7 p.m. at the Park Theatre in Jaffrey. The band has performed for the society many times, and organizers are delighted to welcome them back from the Shenandoah Valley. Sunday, Nov. 8: Le Vent du Nord A driving force in Quebec's progressive folk movement, Le Vent du Nord has also played a leading role in the revival of traditional Quebec music. The group returns to the Park Theatre for a 4 p.m. performance. The group's performances frequently sell out, so concertgoers are encouraged to get their tickets early. This will mark the group's 11th performance for Peterborough Folk Music. Sunday, Nov. 29: An Irish Christmas Celebrate the season with An Irish Christmas, featuring John Doyle, Cathie Ryan and Mick McAuley. This rare U.S. tour brings the acclaimed musicians together for a special holiday performance at 4 p.m. at the Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Church. Saturday, Dec. 5: Tracy Grammer and Jim Henry The duo of Tracy Grammer and Jim Henry brings together musicianship, tight harmonies, a diverse repertoire and the kind of musical chemistry and humorous banter that comes from more than 20 years of playing together. They take the stage at 8 p.m. in Bass Hall at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture. Sunday, Dec. 20: Low Lily The anniversary season continues with Low Lily, a Brattleboro-based folk-soul trio, performing at 4 p.m. in Bass Hall. The group will bring the year's concert series to a close with its blend of folk-inspired sounds and soulful harmonies.
