How to Choose the Best-fitting Private School for Your Child

One of the most important decisions that parents face is where they want their child to attend school. While the majority of American children attend public schools, about nine percent of students in kindergarten to 12th grade are enrolled in a private school, according to the most recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Parents choose to educate their children at a private school for a variety of reasons, including religious affiliation, school size, and geographical location. Many parents are seeking an educational environment that matches their family values or their child's specific academic needs. If enrollment in a private school is of interest to your family, how do you go about choosing the best-fitting school? What are the questions that you need to ask during your initial research, the interview process, or while on a tour of the school?Let's break down several of the most important aspects to consider. First, what kind of school are you looking for? There are many faith-based, independent and non-secular, or progressive options when it comes to school philosophy. Additionally, what are the student's academic goals and is the school a good match for those interests as far as classes and programs.Location is a key factor as well. Does the school's geographical location fit into what your family needs on a long-term basis and is the commute doable, or if it's a boarding school, will you be able to visit often to provide emotional support, etc.?The financial cost of private school is, of course, at the top of every family's mind and there are often costs to consider beyond tuition. Be sure to examine all the financial implications, as well as the available resources for assistance.Accreditation is paramount. Definitely verify that the school is accredited by a recognized educational organization. Next, research the graduation outcomes and college transition rates to ensure academic validity and potential for your child's success. If your child has a disability or special learning needs, you'll need to ask whether the school has teachers and resources available to adequately support those needs and provide necessary accommodations. Are the class sizes and student-teacher ratios at a level that support individual student needs? Most parents are also concerned about safety and inquire about the school's safety measures. Are the appropriate protocols in place to protect students?Likewise, what are the disciplinary procedures around things like bullying or violence, and what is the code of conduct that students are expected to follow. What happens if a rule is broken?Beyond academics, what other social and extracurricular activities are available? Are there sports teams and clubs available, and resources to support your child's interests?Another first step is to attend an open house and tour the school. How are different grades and the classrooms structured? Meet the administrators and teaching staff at the school and ask direct questions about academics and other areas of concern. If it's a boarding school, tour the residence halls, bathrooms, and dining facilities. Do they seem well-maintained, organized, and clean? What will your child's daily schedule look like and will their day be adequately supported by staff members?Ensure there are medical personnel and facilities available to assist with medications or illness, as well as mental health resources if needed. Are there staff members who can assess a student's stress or anxiety levels and provide necessary intervention?School is where children spend a large number of their awake hours every week and choosing the right educational setting for your child is important. Although sometimes unpredictable changes need to be made if a school doesn't turn out to be the best fit, there are many options available and the ability to pivot and adapt can be an equally important lesson.
