Smile, Jack: Pumpkin Carving Tips for Kids of All Ages

When the bright orange gourds of Halloween roll back around, will you be ready? Whether your kids are two or 22, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns can be a fun tradition for the entire family. First, let's start with a few tips for choosing the perfect pumpkin. Buy your pumpkins locally, if possible, to ensure a longer lifespan and carve about a week or so before Halloween to prevent the jack-o'-lantern from rotting too early. Sometimes up to two weeks ahead of time can be fine, depending on where the carved pumpkin will be placed and its exposure to rain, temperature, etc. Keeping them in a cool, dry spot is ideal. To slow the rotting process even more, some recommend soaking a carved pumpkin in a vinegar solution. Submerge a carved jack-o'-lantern in a mix of 10 parts water to one part white vinegar for 20 to 30 minutes to kill surface bacteria and mold spores. Size and shape are important, too. The bigger the pumpkin, the more surface space there is to carve. Although it may seem like a small pumpkin would be best for kids to carve, it actually allows their small hands less room for creativity and tool movement. When scooping out the seeds and goop, children may have an aversion to the feel of the pumpkin innards and that's a personal sensory preference. Scooping tools from a pumpkin carving kit or using an ice cream scoop can help avoid most of the sliminess. Help contain the mess by carving outside if that's an option. If not, carving on a water-safe surface is best and spreading out an old towel, newspapers or trash bags underneath can be a lifesaver. When done, simply fold it all up together and throw the mess away. Roasting the pumpkin seeds can be an additional fun kitchen activity and delicious homemade snack for kids. Find recipes online for the spice blends that taste best and get to roasting when the carving is finished! For little ones who are under age five, stick to the basics of the face: eyes, nose, mouth. Let them choose the shapes of each and help them sketch the face with a washable marker before carving starts to be sure mistakes are avoided. Cookie cutters can also create fun shapes safely or eliminate carving entirely with really young children by allowing them to simply draw on faces with markers, paint their pumpkin, or cover it in stickers. Using kid-safe tools, preschoolers and older can help with at least some of the carving with adult assistance. Purchase battery-operated candles to place inside so children can "light" the jack-o'-lantern all by themselves. Elementary-school-aged youth may want to get a little more fancy with their designs. Download and print templates found online or purchase design books with removable pages. Look for designs or characters that match their personal interests. Preteens and teens may be more difficult to entice with carving alone, although some may still enjoy the nostalgia and family tradition aspect or the artistic outlet. A smaller, quicker-to-carve pumpkin might work best for the reluctant carvers. For an extra incentive to encourage participation from older kids, have a contest with prizes for the most creative, funniest design, etc. Enjoy and appreciate any time they decide to spend with the family on a carving activity. Allow your carved pumpkins to decorate as long as possible to extend the seasonal joy into November. Afterwards, if they're still in good shape, consider looking for a nearby farm that might collect pumpkins to feed its animals. While carved pumpkins are often as short-lived as your child's bucket of Halloween candy, the memories created during the process can last a lifetime.
