Farmers Market Week: More than a place to buy food

On a sunny Saturday morning, I grab a basket and stroll to the farmers market. About two dozen vendors offer everything from vegetables picked hours earlier to bread baked before dawn and cheese crafted from fresh milk. Nearly every item has a story, a place and a person behind it. As a retired farmer, I appreciate these leisurely weekends because I remember when market days looked very different. Weekends were not spent with a cup of coffee. They meant waking before sunrise, packing a vehicle, driving for an hour or more, setting up a tent and standing beneath it through sun, wind and rain before packing everything up and heading home. In many ways, a farmers market day could be more exhausting than a day spent working on the farm. Knowing how much effort goes into bringing fresh food to market gives me a deep appreciation for the farmers who show up week after week. Growing Community A century ago, before supermarkets became commonplace, farmers markets were often the center of community life. People came not only to buy and sell food but also to exchange news, catch up with neighbors and stay connected to local life. During the 12 years I spent as a vendor at the Concord Farmers Market, I watched families grow. I saw babies become school-age children, and shared both celebrations and losses with loyal customers. Beyond the vegetables and baked goods, the market helped build relationships. That sense of connection is still one of the greatest values farmers markets offer today. Fresh Matters Freshness is one of the simplest reasons to shop locally. Once fruits and vegetables are harvested, they begin to lose flavor and nutritional value. Produce sold at a farmers market is often picked within hours or days of reaching your table. It is difficult to find food that is fresher, more seasonal or more closely connected to the place where it was grown. Buying directly from farmers also gives shoppers a chance to ask questions about how their food was produced and learn more about the people growing it. Supporting Local Farms When you buy from a local farmer, more of your money stays in the community. Farmers purchase supplies locally, pay local taxes and support other local businesses. Farmers market prices may sometimes be higher than those found in large supermarkets, but they reflect the real costs of growing food on a small scale. Farming remains challenging work, and direct-to-consumer sales help many small farms remain viable. Protecting Working Land Supporting local farms also helps preserve farmland. When farmland is converted to housing, commercial development or parking lots, productive soil can be lost for generations. Every purchase made at a farmers market helps strengthen the economic foundation that allows farms to continue operating. Farmers markets can still serve as gathering places where neighbors meet, conversations happen and local agriculture remains visible in everyday life. The first week of August was Farmers Market Week, a time to recognize the farmers, vendors and shoppers who help sustain these community institutions.
