As Jaffrey buries part of history, what should future generations remember?

A century from now, when people gather in Jaffrey to open a time capsule buried during the nation's 250th anniversary celebration, they'll discover a collection of objects chosen by people they never knew. A time capsule box container was used instead of the metal capsule. The hermetically sealed container was placed in the Bernie & Louise Watson Garden on the River Street side of the theatre. A permanent bronze marker will be placed there with instructions to open the time capsule in 100 years on July 4, 2126. Those items include: a July 2 newspaper; store sales fliers; a 2026/1976 commemorative nickel; a penny; a Cathedral of The Pine medallion; a Conant 2026 High School Yearbook; CD recordings of Bernie Watson, Eve Pierce, and Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson; A Millipore Sigma beaker; maps of Jaffrey; Melville School, Jaffrey Civic Center, and Jaffrey Women's Club, Little Red School House brochures; and over 100 personal postcards from residents with messages to future generations. As part of The Park Theatre's America 250 Cultural Fair, organizers asked members of the public to help determine what will be sealed inside a community time capsule buried on July 4 — beside the theatre's River Street parking lot.. Rather than selecting the contents themselves, the theatre invited residents to submit ideas for items they believe best represent life in Jaffrey and the Monadnock Region today. The project was one of several events planned during the theatre's three-day celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. While the milestone provides the occasion, organizers said the time capsule is intended to preserve a snapshot of everyday life for people who will open it 100 years from now. A tradition of preserving everyday life Time capsules have existed in various forms for centuries, but modern examples often focus less on valuable artifacts than on preserving ordinary life. One of the earliest known American examples dates to 1795, when Samuel Adams and Paul Revere placed a brass capsule inside the cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House. Rediscovered more than 200 years later, its contents provided historians with an unexpected look at life during the nation's early years. Many communities have since created their own time capsules to commemorate anniversaries, civic milestones or significant local events. Often, the most meaningful items are not the rarest but the ones that reveal how people lived from day to day. A local newspaper can document community issues. A photograph can preserve a familiar streetscape before it changes. A handwritten note or recording can capture voices and perspectives that might otherwise be lost to history. That idea is at the center of Jaffrey's project. A community effort The Park Theatre is partnering with the Jaffrey Historical Society to oversee the project. Along with considering ideas submitted by the public, the historical society will contribute its own recommendations before the capsule is sealed. Organizers suggested beforehand submissions could include newspapers, photographs, recordings, historical artifacts and other objects that reflect life in 2026, while leaving the invitation broad enough for residents to propose their own ideas. The approach recognizes that a community's history is shaped not only by major events but also by the experiences of the people who live there. Originally opened in 1922, The Park Theatre served as a community gathering place for more than five decades before closing in 1976. After years of fundraising and restoration, the nonprofit theatre reopened in 2021 as a performing arts and cinema venue, continuing its role as a cultural hub for the Monadnock Region. The America 250 Cultural Fair reflects that mission by combining entertainment, history and community participation over three days. In addition to the time capsule ceremony, the event featured films, exhibits, a Fred Marple variety show, a cookout and other activities celebrating the nation's semiquincentennial. Looking ahead Once buried, the capsule is intended to remain sealed until July 4, 2126. According to organizers, instructions engraved on the capsule will direct that it be opened after 100 years, with its contents reviewed before new items are added and the capsule is resealed. It is then intended to be reopened every 50 years, allowing future generations to contribute their own chapter to the collection. It will reflect how one community chose to introduce itself to people living a century in the future, preserving moments from history and a record of what today's residents believed was worth remembering.
