Revolutionary History comes to downtown Keene

KEENE — Downtown Keene will transform into a living history museum and festival ground this Saturday, July 4, as the city hosts its massive Monadnock 250th Celebration to mark the semiquincentennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The day's festivities will officially begin at 10:45 a.m. at the historic Wyman Tavern (339 Main St.) with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence by the Mayor's Youth Council. Immediately following the reading at 11 a.m., the celebration's centerpiece parade will kick off from the tavern, marching down Main Street and concluding at Railroad Square. Once the parade arrives downtown, Railroad Square will serve as the festival's main performance hub. A packed afternoon of live music kicks off at 12:20 p.m. with the "Star-Spangled Banner" performed by Main Street Four, followed closely by a set from the Keene Cheshiremen Chorus. At 12:40 p.m., community members are invited to join in a mass sing-along of "She's a Grand Old Flag" led by Jenn Garretson, followed by performances from The Monadnock Blend, the Nelson Town Band, and the Keene Jazz Orchestra. Beyond the main stage, the celebration will stretch across multiple downtown venues from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Living History Hubs: Both the Wyman Tavern and neighboring Bruder House will host historic open houses. Visitors can tour Colonel Isaac Wyman's home, explore the outdoor Grounded in History exhibit, and watch live demonstrations of blacksmithing, basket making, wool carding, and butter churning.Exhibits and Ancestry: The Historical Society of Cheshire County (246 Main St.) will feature its exhibition Beyond the Battlefield: Cheshire County in the Revolutionary Era, alongside a specialized Wall of Honor where attendees can pay tribute to their own Revolutionary ancestors.Family and Pop-Up Entertainment: Children can visit a petting zoo hosted by Enchanted Animal Parties at the corner of Davis and Main Street. Meanwhile, the City Tire parking lot will host live music from Gavin Key and the Get Down split by a performance from Doug the Devil Stick Man. A mini-jet and military vehicle display will also be stationed at the Athens Pizza parking lot.Downtown Comforts: To combat the July heat, a misting cooling tent will be operational at the Transportation Building on Gilbo Avenue alongside the all-day Farmers' Market of Keene. The Colonial Theatre will also open its doors at noon for a free 12:30 p.m. screening of the family classic "The Sandlot." Railroad Square will host a diverse array of over a dozen food trucks and local vendors ranging from Fritz Belgian Fries and Tito's Taqueria to local favorites like the Vernon Creamie and Kona Ice. Dozens of local non-profits, political committees, and artisan groups will also maintain educational tables throughout the afternoon. Public restrooms will be available at the Historical Society of Cheshire County, the Bruder Street cul-de-sac, and at the edge of Railroad Square.
