Beyond Medal Day: For one day, MacDowell opens a creative world usually hidden from view

For most of the year, MacDowell is intentionally quiet. Spread across hundreds of wooded acres in Peterborough, the historic artist residency is a place where writers, composers, filmmakers, architects, playwrights and visual artists come from around the world to do something increasingly rare: create without interruption. There are no public tours. No regular visitors. The studios scattered throughout the campus remain private, allowing artists to focus entirely on their work. That changes for one day each year. On Sunday, June 28, MacDowell welcomed the public to its annual Medal Day celebration, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the campus, meet artists currently in residence and witness a tradition that has connected the Monadnock Region to American arts and culture for more than a century. This year's celebration honored composer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton with the 66th Edward MacDowell Medal, one of the nation's oldest honors recognizing an artist whose work has made an enduring contribution to American culture. While the ceremony celebrates Braxton's accomplishments, Medal Day also serves another purpose: inviting the public into an artistic community that has quietly helped shape American culture since 1907. Founded by composer Edward MacDowell and pianist Marian MacDowell, the residency was built on a simple idea — artists produce their strongest work when they have the freedom, time and space to focus solely on creating. More than a century later, that philosophy remains largely unchanged, even as the creative world around it has transformed. Each year, MacDowell welcomes approximately 300 artists selected through a competitive application process. Writers, composers, architects, playwrights, filmmakers and visual artists spend several weeks living and working on the Peterborough campus, developing projects while surrounded by a community of fellow creatives. Over the decades, MacDowell Fellows have collectively earned more than 100 Pulitzer Prizes, Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, Tony Awards and MacArthur Fellowships, with works created there becoming part of the American cultural landscape. Many readers may recognize some of the artists connected to MacDowell even if they are unfamiliar with the residency itself. Aaron Copland worked on the ballet "Appalachian Spring" during his residency. Thornton Wilder developed play "Our Town." James Baldwin spent time working on novel "Giovanni's Room." Leonard Bernstein, Georgia O'Keeffe, Toni Morrison, Stephen Sondheim and countless other influential artists have also spent time at MacDowell, underscoring the organization's impact across generations and artistic disciplines. That legacy is reflected in the Edward MacDowell Medal itself. Presented annually since 1960, the medal recognizes an individual whose body of work has made an outstanding contribution to American culture. Previous recipients include Robert Frost, Georgia O'Keeffe, Leonard Bernstein, Toni Morrison, Stephen Sondheim, Joan Didion, David Lynch, Louise Bourgeois, Yoko Ono and Nan Goldin. This year's recipient, Anthony Braxton, joins that distinguished list following a career that has challenged conventional ideas of composition and improvisation. A MacArthur Fellow, Guggenheim Fellow and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, Braxton's work has influenced generations of musicians working across jazz, experimental music and contemporary classical composition. "It is an honor to recognize Anthony Braxton for his extraordinary contributions to the field of music composition," said Chiwoniso Kaitano, executive director of MacDowell. "Through a body of work that bridges improvisation, structural experimentation and a range of global influences, Braxton has expanded the possibilities of contemporary music and inspired generations of composers and performers." Braxton said receiving the medal is equally meaningful. "I am deeply honored to receive the Edward MacDowell Medal. MacDowell has long stood as a sanctuary for artistic inquiry, imagination, and transformation." For visitors, however, Medal Day is about much more than the award ceremony. Following the presentation, the campus becomes an open house. Guests are invited to explore the grounds, picnic on the property and visit artists' studios, where current fellows share works still in progress. Writers read from unfinished manuscripts, visual artists discuss developing exhibitions, and composers, filmmakers and choreographers offer a rare glimpse into projects that are still taking shape. It is one of the few opportunities each year for the public to witness not simply finished works of art, but the creative process itself. Artists accepted to MacDowell temporarily step away from the demands of everyday life to immerse themselves in uninterrupted creative work. While technology and the pace of modern life have changed dramatically since MacDowell was founded more than a century ago, the residency's core belief — that artists benefit from dedicated time, solitude and a supportive creative community — has endured. For residents of the Monadnock Region, Medal Day also offers a reminder that one of the country's most influential artistic institutions has long called Peterborough home. Although artists arrive from across the U.S. and around the world, the work created on the wooded campus often goes on to influence audiences far beyond New Hampshire. The celebration at MacDowell honors one remarkable artist, but it also shines light on the environment that has quietly nurtured generations of creative work and helped shape American culture for more than a century.
