Windham Philharmonic closes season June 1

BRATTLEBORO — The Windham Philharmonic is set to close its current season with an eclectic and adventurous performance on Monday, June 1, at the Latchis Theatre. The upcoming concert promises a diverse program structured around "six orchestral movements, six composers, and six moods," ranging from intense musical battles to historic circus tunes. The evening will open with the dramatic first movement of Carl Nielsen's Fifth Symphony, a piece characterized by a combative duel where a solo snare drum attempts to disrupt the orchestra. According to organizers, the performance represents a theme of "asymmetrical resistance." From there, the orchestra will shift tones to offer a moment of reflection, performing the slow movement from Anton Bruckner's Sixth Symphony, themed around "Peace after Grieving." The mood will lighten significantly with Igor Stravinsky's "Circus Polka." Originally commissioned by the Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1941, the piece was famously choreographed for a prima ballerina and 50 elephants at Madison Square Garden.
