Wolves rally past Tulsa Rogers; Lady Wolves fall in soccer action

The Shawnee Lady Wolves stormed back but suffered a disappointing loss in penalty kicks, but the Wolves came from behind to beat Tulsa Rogers 4-3 in a big district win in the boys' matchof. Shawnee and Tulsa Rogers traded goals before the Wolves came out on top late. Jack Ford started the scoring for the Wolves with a rebound goal that he sent past the keeper with 32:05 left in the first half. Ten minutes later, the Ropers got a great header on a corner kick that sailed across the face of the goal and was headed back across the face to the top of the net. But Shawnee took the lead again when Jace McDaniel found a free kick by Zach Riggle and jumped to kick the ball past the keeper for a 2-1 SHS lead with 11 minutes left in the half. A controversial foul call in the box gave the Ropers a penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2 with two and a half minutes left before intermission. But the Ropers weren't finished. With less than a minute remaining before halftime, the Rogers keeper caught a Shawnee shot and punted the ball with a strong wind at his back. The ball bounced high off the turf and a Roper striker leapt into the air and headed it high and into the goal for a 3-2 lead at the break. But the second half belonged to Shawnee. With 20 minutes left, Jace McDaniel was driving across the box when a defender clipped him from behind. Jax Martin took the penalty kick and pulled it low into the left corner of the goal for a 3-3 tie. With about 11 minutes left, McDaniel struck again. He took possession deep in the Roper end and drove across the center of the field. From 30 yards out, McDaniel blasted a shot off the crossbar and down into the goal. Keeper Kobe Karner made several late saves to preserve the win for the Wolves. Shawnee improved to 7-4 on the season and Rogers fell to 5-8. The Wolves are back in action Tuesday when they will host Coweta in another district contest. The Lady Wolves also fashioned a comeback but their game was decided in penalty kicks, which the Lady Ropers won 2-1 with only Anna Parilla finding the back of the net. Rogers got the opening goal with 13:42 left in the first half. A high bouncing ball made it over Shawnee keeper Zoey Bechtel early in the second half. Shawnee finally got on the board when Lillian Satterfield bent a free kick into the corner of the net to cut the lead to 2-1. With 3:19 left, Parrilla got behind the defense and won a challenge by the Lady Roper keeper and put it in the net to tie the game 2-2. With less than a minute remaining, Satterfield put a beautiful crossing pass across the face of the net and not one but two Lady Wolves had a chance to put it away, but the shot sailed over the goal. After two overtime periods failed to determine a winner, the two teams advanced to penalty kicks. Parrilla was the only Lady Wolf to convert her kick and Rogers got the win 2-1. It was the first win of the year from the Lady Roper squad. They have played a tough schedule. The Lady Wolves have one win against Tulsa Hale. They get back on the field Tuesday against Coweta.
