Is it a Find!?

Hi Dan, I have a cast iron dog that measures 4 by 2.75 inches. It was found at the bottom of an old desk we purchased in the 70s. There are no markings on it. Is it old and is it worth anything? What was it used for? Thanks, John Greetings John, Your dog was most likely used as a paperweight. It likely dates to the mid-19th century. One clue as to its age is the hand cut nuts on the bottom that hold the dog to the base. The base appears to be cast iron, while the dog looks to be made from brass. It is quite a handsome piece and would be an easy sell. Your item could be incorporated in many categories of collecting such as dogs, paperweights and metal-ware. I could see it selling for upwards of $75 in an antique or collectibles shop. It would be best to leave the patina untouched and refrain from any attempts to clean it other than a light dusting. Your question is much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to write in with your find and I look forward to others you may have.
