Cold Start: A Short History of Snowmobiles

For many in New England, winter doesn't signal hibernation — it marks the start of snowmobile season. In southwestern New Hampshire, riders eagerly await the first substantial snowfall, knowing it opens access to an expansive network of trails. At the heart of this system is the 42-mile Cheshire Rail Trail linking Keene to Massachusetts, along with the 7-mile Monadnock Recreational Rail Trail connecting several towns throughout the Monadnock Region. Together, these corridors form a winter highway for outdoor enthusiasts, drawing both local riders and visitors each year. Snowmobiling's popularity today may center on recreation, but its origins were rooted in necessity. According to the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association, the earliest snowmobiles were designed as practical winter transportation across the northern United States and Canada. Before plowed roads were commonplace, doctors relied on them to make house calls, and postal carriers used them to deliver mail through deep snow. In its infancy, the snowmobile was a hardworking utility vehicle, valued less for speed and more for reliability. The very term "snowmobile" was coined in 1917 by Virgil D. White, a Ford dealer from West Ossipee, N.H. White developed a conversion kit for the Model T that replaced wheels with skis and caterpillar tracks, allowing the car to travel over snow. His innovation not only expanded winter mobility but also introduced a name that would define an entire industry. A breakthrough came in 1924 when Carl Eliason of Sayner, Wisconsin, built what is widely considered the first true modern snowmobile prototype. Eliason's invention was deeply personal. Born with a chronic foot condition, he found it difficult to travel through deep snow to check trap lines or keep pace with friends while hunting. Snowshoes proved nearly impossible for him to use. Determined to remain active outdoors, he began experimenting with alternatives. Using old skis, parts from a Ford Model T, a small boat motor and even components from his bicycle, Eliason assembled a motorized toboggan. He tested his creation in the woods around his hometown, demonstrating that powered winter travel could be compact and practical. In 1927, he patented his design, laying groundwork for future innovation. During the 1920s and '30s, Joseph-Armand Bombardier of Québec, Canada refined snow travel even further. Bombardier focused on developing a superior caterpillar track system capable of navigating deep, wet snow. His larger, multi-passenger vehicles became lifelines for rural communities, transporting families, students and goods across otherwise impassable terrain. These machines demonstrated snowmobiles' potential beyond individual use — they could serve entire communities. By the 1950s, consumer demand began to shift. Riders wanted smaller, lighter and faster machines for personal use. In 1959, Bombardier answered that demand with the introduction of the Ski-Doo, a one- or two-person snowmobile that transformed winter travel into winter recreation. The Ski-Doo's success sparked a surge of competition throughout the 1960s, as manufacturers raced to improve speed, handling and reliability. During the 1970s and beyond, manufacturers prioritized rider safety, comfort and performance; suspension systems were redesigned to handle rough terrain more smoothly, engines became quieter and more efficient and track designs improved for better traction and maneuverability. Helmets, protective gear and trail systems also advanced, helping make snowmobiling safer and more accessible to families and enthusiasts alike. One milestone in performance innovation came in 1990, when Polaris introduced the Indy 650 RXL, the first snowmobile equipped with electronic fuel injection (EFI). This advancement improved fuel efficiency, throttle response and cold-weather reliability — critical factors for winter machines operating in extreme conditions. EFI technology soon became standard across the industry. Today's snowmobiles are sophisticated, high-performance machines. They are used not only for recreational trail riding but also for mountain riding, backcountry exploration, utility work and even professional racing. Across North America, thousands of miles of groomed trails are maintained by dedicated clubs and volunteers. What began as a tool for survival has become a cherished winter pastime — proof that even the harshest season can inspire innovation and adventure.
