DAY TRIPPING Artful Escapes: Norman Rockwell Museum Stockbridge, Massachusetts

There's something deeply satisfying about spending a day surrounded by art and ideas — stepping out of your routine and into a space where creativity leads the way. &emsp;Museums have a way of slowing time, inviting curiosity, and often inspiring repeat visits. Once you make a habit of day trips like this, you may find yourself planning the next one before you even leave the parking lot. &emsp;One such destination is the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts — a perfect excuse for a scenic drive through rolling Berkshires hills and a day immersed in American art and culture. &emsp;Norman Rockwell, born in New York City in 1894, knew from a young age that he wanted to be an artist. By 14, he was already studying at the New York School of Art (formerly the Chase School of Art). Two years later, he left high school to pursue art full-time at the National Academy of Design before transferring to the Art Students League. There, he studied under Thomas Fogarty and George Bridgman. Fogarty helped shape Rockwell's skills as an illustrator, preparing him for his first commercial commissions, while Bridgman instilled the technical precision that would support Rockwell throughout his long and prolific career. &emsp;Rockwell went on to become one of the busiest and most industrious illustrators of his era. The Norman Rockwell Museum houses an expansive permanent collection of his work, spanning decades and capturing the joys, struggles and everyday poetry of American life with warmth, humor and deep respect for the dignity of working people. &emsp;Beyond Rockwell's iconic illustrations, the museum hosts a dynamic lineup of traveling exhibitions and special events, making each visit feel fresh. Upcoming 2026 exhibitions include: "Jazz Age Illustration," on view through April 5, explores popular illustration during a period of dramatic social and cultural change. Featuring more than 100 works by artists including Aaron Douglas, John Held Jr. and Frank E. Schoonover, the exhibition captures the spirit, style and energy of the era in visually striking ways. "Illustrators of Light," on view through May 10, showcases a rare series of early 20th-century lighting advertisements created for Edison Mazda Lamps, a division of General Electric. Featuring works by Norman Rockwell alongside fellow Golden Age illustrators such as Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth and Dean Cornwell, these luminous paintings — on loan from GE Aerospace — are on display at the museum for the first time. "A Brief History of Illustration: The Abyss," on view through May 31, highlights both the rich history of illustration and the museum's vast 30,000-object collection. This rotating exhibition changes twice a year, each time tracing a theme through history. The Abyss explores the complexity of illustration through the equally complex subject of the ocean. "Shine a Light: The Art of Deb Koffman," on view through June 8, celebrates the life and work of Berkshire-based artist and author Deb Koffman (1956–2021). Known for her bold, text-driven paintings and illustrations, Koffman's work blends humor, hope and honesty — offering reflections on self-kindness, resilience and mental health that are both uplifting and deeply human. &emsp;Along with exhibitions, visitors can enjoy a full calendar of events—interactive family programs, drawing classes, artist talks and readings.
