Spring is for remembering — remembering how good the sun feels on your face, how good a cocktail tastes when you drink it out on the patio, and how weirdly good it feels to come home and kick off boots covered in mud. It's a sweet moment in time, and Winchester is a sweet little place to watch everything come back to life. &emsp;On Main Street, look for spring festivals popping up and signs that the town's farmers' market is getting ready to return. Stop into your favorite spots and say hello to neighbors who have finally let the woodstove die down and have come out for a bite. &emsp;At the welcoming Arlington Inn, you'll find things all spruced up as they prepare for the busy season ahead. Owner Jordan Sharra says, "Guests should expect freshness and finally, chilled beer glasses!" Spring also arrives with a new specialty drink menu, which Sharra loves in particular, "because I can create things with fresher ingredients we will grow on our patio, like mint." She and her team like to keep each season's new menu a surprise, but she promises a blend of old favorites and new creations. &emsp;Food made from scratch is one of the signatures of this full-service restaurant and bed & breakfast, which has five lovely guest rooms. Travelers and locals often take advantage of the Inn for baby showers, graduations, and family reunions, and people also invite friends into town for the Arlington's annual clam bake. &emsp;While the event itself won't take place until July, tickets go on sale at the end of May, building excitement for the incredible buffet of lobsters, clams, burgers, hot dogs, and summer side dishes. "It's a great way for us to celebrate with our wonderful customers," Sharra says. &emsp;But don't wait until summer to start enjoying Winchester's food and drink scene. If you've got guests in town or just need to get out of the house after one of the coldest winters in years, a tasting at New England Sweetwater Distillery just down the road is another worthwhile stop. In a classic brick building downtown, sits the high-vibe tasting room with unique woodwork, lighting, and tall shelves of artisan liquors. &emsp;Get your tasting on, take a tour, and talk with the wonderful owners, who cultivate their spirits from products that spur local agriculture and sustainability. Visitors return to this family-owned distillery again and again for its deep community roots, great selection, and inviting atmosphere. &emsp;If that kind of energy gives you all the feels, then make yourself a note to pop by Outlaw Brewing on Scotland Road, as well. This small craft brewery also focuses on local ingredients. In addition to Outlaw's well-loved brews, the cozy taproom features decadent pastry cases and an impressive coffee bar, with fun, music, and events spilling out onto the lawn as the season of sunshine arrives. &emsp;And don't miss a magical stop at Cheshire Garden's Tiny Farmstand on Burt Hill Road. Homemade popsicles, pies and preserves made with the farm's very own berries are popular fare here. This small family farm, nestled in Winchester's rolling hills, will make you feel like you're in a storybook. Follow along on social media for their opening date in April. &emsp;You're not alone if you're craving the outdoors right now. After some sips and nibbles, it's choose-your-own-adventure time. Winchester is home to several trailheads that lead into Pisgah State Park. Spanning three towns and more than 13,000 acres, Pisgah is popular for hiking, mountain biking, ATV riding, and fishing. Seven ponds and numerous wetlands make it a lively place to visit in spring as nature brings its roots and creatures back to the surface. &emsp;Families with young children can find similar wonders on a smaller scale at the Winchester Learning Center Community Nature Park at the corner of Route 10 and Lawrence Street. Supported by the Monadnock Conservancy, the park has trails, a boardwalk, a stream running through it, and lots of nooks and crannies for little ones to explore. &emsp;If fun for the family is what you're after, don't miss the roar of engines returning to the famous Monadnock Speedway with the 2026 Season Opener set for April 25. Also great for date nights and get-togethers with friends, the Speedway is the place to be once the snow melts. &emsp;"There are a lot of race fans in the region, and we pull people from three states, which I think is very good for Winchester all around," says General Manager Michelle Cloutier. During the off-season, the momentum has already been building with each driver getting spotlighted on social media and ticketed dates hitting the calendar. "Everybody's excited to get back to the track," Cloutier says. &emsp;The Speedway has a long history in the region. After other local tracks closed or stopped hosting these types of races, Bill Brown purchased an old gravel pit and built the Speedway in 1971. It was then paved and, 55 years later, remains the region's hotspot for auto racing. &emsp;"It's a really great, affordable place to come. I think it's cheaper sometimes than going out to the movies," Cloutier says with a laugh. The regular fans are super nice and love to see newcomers. "Everybody feels comfortable, and at the end of the season, people are friends." &emsp;The Speedway offers affordable concessions, an ATM, a beer garden (they even serve Outlaw), and family-friendly seating sections with no alcohol. "Once people start going, they find they're rooting for someone, and they start coming more and more," Cloutier says. &emsp;Her son, JT, is a driver, and he noticed there was always a young boy standing by Victory Lane when he came around the track. So, JT took the time to take the boy aside, and they had a great conversation. Cloutier hopes to build more connections like that. So, this year, she's launching a Kids' Club to encourage interaction between drivers and young fans who love seeing their heroes up close. &emsp;If you find yourself getting into the motorsports scene in Winchester, you should also check out the Winchester Speedpark, a dirt track that focuses on motocross, dirt bike racing, and supercross. It's exhilarating to see dirt flying while riders lean in; expect to feel fully entertained by the time you head home. Whichever flavor of speed you prefer, you'll have a great time ushering in warmer days. &emsp;So, pull on those boots (yes, there's still mud out there), tell your favorite people it's time to get out of the house, and take a drive over to Winchester. This sometimes less-visited corner of the region is filled with big community, unexpected food and drink, and so many flavors of adventure.
