High-scoring Snacks for the Big Game By Sarah Sherman As someone who loves to cook for special occasions, it's no surprise that my favorite part of football season is the food. Of course, that means that the Super Bowl is top-tier excitement for both football fans and my menu planning. To save time and game-day stress, I tend to lean toward simple dishes that can be made in advance or cooked quickly. Hot wings, potato skins and chili are some of my favorite go-to plays for satisfying a hungry crowd with minimal kitchen effort. While we all like to stick to our top defenders, if you're still looking to pick up a last-minute player or two for your taste-team roster, I've included a few possible contenders for the starting lineup below. Put me in, Coach. I'm ready to eat. Walking Tacos I love to serve walking tacos on game day because they're a mess-free version of an all-time favorite. Start with single-serving bags of corn chips or nacho chips and top with seasoned ground beef and shredded cheese. Then, each person can finish by adding their toppings of choice. Easy-peasy. Or, single-serving chip bags can also make great vessels for a thick chili, rather than the usual bowls. King's Hawaiian Sliders These sliders are super simple and can be customized with your filling of choice. Start with a package of King's Hawaiian rolls. Cut them in half while still connected and spread one side with mayo, mustard or your favorite condiment. Top each roll with a folded piece of ham and cheese (you could also use turkey, roast beef or even precooked and sauced meatballs) and replace the top half of the rolls. If desired, drizzle on a sauce of melted butter, mustard, poppy seeds and Worcestershire sauce and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes to absorb. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes and you're done. When pulled apart, each roll becomes a cheesy and flavorful slider that's sure to hit the spot. With 12 rolls per package, it's a quick way to please a ravenous crowd. Sausage Cheese Dip If you've never made the famous Velveeta tailgate dip, you'll definitely want to give it a try this weekend. With only three ingredients, it couldn't be any easier. Start with a pound of Velveeta cheese, cubed, and mix in a large microwavable bowl with a can of Rotel Diced Tomatoes and Green Chilies (do not drain), and a half pound of cooked and crumbled sausage. Microwave for a few minutes, stir and microwave again for a couple more minutes until cheese is completely melted. Served with your family's chips of choice or even a selection of raw veggies for dipping, this hot and cheesy recipe is a game-day winner. Dipped Strawberry Footballs Don't forget something sweet! Chocolate-dipped strawberries aren't just for Valentine's Day, they also make adorable footballs. Dip each strawberry in melted chocolate and let sit until hardened. Pipe on white icing to resemble the football laces. You could also get a similar effect with chocolate-dipped madeleine cookies or by making football-shaped Oreo truffles. Yum!
