To keep your balance, you must keep moving." — Albert Einstein I'm not sure Einstein ever lived through a New England winter, but having survived decades of ice, snow, howling winds and sub-zero temperatures, I can attest that "moving" and "winter" are not exactly synonymous in my book. When the cold settles in, all I really want to do is curl up by the fire with a comfy blanket and a good novel, avoiding the outdoors until the crocuses finally dare to peek out of the ground. But as I get older, I'm realizing that hibernation isn't a great recipe for longevity — or joy. But what if we leaned into winter instead? In this issue, we explore ways to nudge ourselves out of our comfort zones and into the great outdoors. Take Valentine's Day, for example: there's a strong temptation, especially among those of us over 50, to order takeout, slip into pajamas, and log into Netflix. In this issue, we explore small but meaningful ways to step beyond the familiar and into the fresh, cold air. Consider it Valentine's Day reimagined. Our Valentine's Day guide, beginning on page 16, offers a few enticing possibilities. Imagine the fun of throwing axes at targets with your sweetheart in downtown Keene, followed by a short walk to enjoy authentic, comforting Vietnamese food. Bibliophiles might prefer browsing Peterborough's Toadstool Bookshop (for those fireside reads you're planning this winter) before indulging in aphrodisiac oysters and creative cocktails at nearby Pearl restaurant. And for those requiring no nudging to get outdoors, click your cross-country boots into skis and glide along well-groomed trails, reveling in the hush of pine trees and dramatic views of Mt. Monadnock — then cap it all off with après-ski in a cozy bar, complete with yummy appetizers and draft beer. If you'd rather avoid the Valentine's Day reservation rush, consider creating your own celebration before or after the big day. The Chesterfield Inn, for example (see page 23), hosts a Valentine's Day dinner the two days before the 14th, as well as on the day itself.
