Hello Dan, I have this medal, about the size of a half dollar, which was my Great Grandfathers' from the Civil War. It has his name on the rear, Albany N.Y, and 13th NY H.ART. Dog tags were not a standard issue during the Civil War and it was up to the soldiers to purchase or make their own. Most were made from a die similar to how a coin is struck and made. The back was generally left blank for engraving or stamping one's name and unit. Many soldiers did not carry dog tags during the Civil War and they are somewhat scarce. As stated his name was placed on the back along with Albany N.Y., which was most likely his hometown. The 13th NY H.ART signified that he was in the 13th New York regiment's heavy artillery division.
