Is it a Find!?

Hello Dan, What I am writing in about is this gold Presidential George Washington dollar and stamp that was handed down to me and my husband from my late mother-in-law's estate. I think that the gold and the stamp make it quite valuable. We found a receipt with it stating that she paid over $50 for it with shipping. I was wondering what it may be worth today? Sincerely, Barbra Greetings Barbra, Unfortunately your coin and stamp were sold as highly collectable items, when in actuality they are not. Often these sets are presented in a decorative holder and sold through television and print advertisements to under-informed buyers. If taken apart, the total value of your set is under two dollars. The 2007 George Washington dollar has no further value to a coin collector because it has been altered by being plated with gold. The gold value plated on the coin is slightly over one dollar, and it would be cost prohibitive to remove it for refining. Interestingly, one ounce of gold can cover about 100 square feet or 14,400 square inches if hammered thin (enough to cover over 7,000 coins). The stamp that is encased is worth about fifty cents and as a whole set you might be able to sell it in a retail setting for about $5. It is best to stay away from purchasing such items, and if one truly wants to buy and collect coins, they should do their research first. Thank you for the question and sorry it was not worth what you may have been expecting. Perhaps there might be other coins that could have some value in the estate.
