Holiday Fungi Folklore: The Theory of Fly Agaric Mushrooms

For children, much of the Christmas holiday is centralized around Jolly Old Saint Nicholas, but have you ever wondered where Santa Claus really came from? We all know the classic story: a jolly man in a red suit, flying through the sky in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, squeezing down chimneys to deliver gifts. But what if the origins of Santa weren't just rooted in folklore … but in mushrooms? Yes, mushrooms, and not the kind you toss on pizza. According to ethnomycologist Robert Gordon Wasson and anthropologist John A. Rush, some of the most iconic Christmas imagery might have sprouted from the ancient rituals of Indigenous peoples near — fittingly — the North Pole. Their studies of fungi, spirituality and shamanic traditions open up a surprisingly magical (and slightly psychedelic) window into what might have inspired the Santa we know today. Let's start with the star of this theory: the Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric mushroom. Picture it: bright red cap, sprinkled with perfect, little white dots. It's the mushroom emoji before emojis existed. It's also the mushroom that appears in fairy tales, video games and storybooks … and strangely enough, its colors match Santa's uniform with suspicious precision. Coincidence? Wasson and Rush thought maybe not. Centuries ago, the Indigenous peoples of Siberia and the Arctic regions celebrated the Winter Solstice on Dec. 21, the darkest time of the year. Shamans played a major role in these celebrations, guiding rituals that often centered around the Amanita muscaria mushroom — famous for its hallucinogenic effects. And here's where it gets extra interesting. The fly agaric is powerful — very powerful — so shamans had to prepare it carefully before using it in ceremonies. One method was to dry the mushrooms, which reduces their potency. And how did they dry them? By hanging them near the fire … often in socks. If you just looked over at your hanging Christmas stocking with a questioning pause, you're not alone! The theory suggests that the familiar scene of stockings drying (or waiting to be filled) by the fireplace may echo this ancient practice. It gets better. Reindeer — actual, real Arctic reindeer — love Amanita muscaria. Not only can they eat the mushrooms without harm, but they're said to enjoy the effects. Some accounts even describe reindeer prancing, hopping and acting downright euphoric after munching on them. To safely consume the mushroom's properties, shamans would sometimes feed the fungus to reindeer and then drink the reindeer's urine, which had filtered out the toxic components while keeping the hallucinogenic ones. Suddenly, the idea of flying reindeer doesn't seem so far-fetched. Imagine a reindeer high on psychedelic mushrooms leaping around in the snow; it might look a lot like it's flying. Fly agaric mushrooms are said to produce feelings of joy, singing, lightness and yes, the sensation of flying. During solstice ceremonies, shamans entered trance-like states where they believed they could travel spiritually, transform into animals or journey to the North Star to gather wisdom for their community. After their visionary journeys, the shaman would return and "share their gifts" — the knowledge and insights they received during the ritual. It's not hard to see shades of modern Santa here: a magical figure who travels through the sky and brings gifts back to the people. One more detail ties this mushroom-Santa connection together: access to winter homes. In heavy winter snow, the doors of yurts would often become blocked. Shamans, returning from their journeys, sometimes entered through an opening in the roof — essentially the early version of the chimney. So, picture it: a red-and-white-clad figure bringing gifts, entering homes through the roof, in midwinter, with the help of reindeer. If that doesn't sound familiar, you might need to watch a holiday movie or two. Whether or not the Amanita muscaria truly inspired Santa Claus, it's hard not to smile at the idea. Maybe Santa's origins are less about the North Pole workshop and more about ancient rituals, magic mushrooms and a dash of psychedelic holiday cheer. After all, Christmas is about wonder.
