Is it a Find!?

Dear Dan, I inherited this penny collection from my father. He collected wheat pennies and placed them in a few coin albums. It appeared the doubles that he had were all placed in this bag. Most of the pennies are from 1940 and later. The bag is so heavy that it is difficult to lift. How much are the common wheat pennies worth? Thank you, Milo Hello Milo, Most common date wheat pennies, especially those minted after 1940, are worth about three cents each. It would be best to look through the albums to see if there are any key dates, which can bring substantially more. Some of the key dates include the 1909 S VDB, 1911 S, 1914 D, 1922, 1924 D, 1931 S and the 1955 double die. If these coins are missing in your books, the chances of finding these dates amongst the doubles are slim to none. An excellent means of determining the amount of pennies you have in the bag is by weighing them. A penny weighs 2.5 grams, thus placing them on a postage scale and dividing the weight should give you an approximation of how many you have. As with all coins it is best to leave them untouched and no effort to clean them should be made. Thank you for taking the time to inquire about your collection.
