Tragically, drowning remains one of the most common, and most preventable, causes of death for young children. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the United States, an average of 4,000 unintentional drownings occur each year, along with an additional 8,000 nonfatal drowning events. Among children ages 1–4, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death. In 2022, drowning deaths increased by about 28 percent for children in the 1–4 age group compared with 2019 levels.Alarmingly, drownings in lifeguarded pools still account for a significant share — some estimates suggest over 500 deaths annually occur at pools that are ostensibly monitored.
