Keene Welcomes A New Sculpture: Thought Cage by Christopher Curtis

The City of Keene will soon celebrate the installation of "The Thought Cage" on Oct. 26, 2025. The community is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Ashuelot River Park to officially unveil the sculpture "The Thought Cage" created by Vermont artist Christopher Curtis, which is on loan to the city. The project, organized by Rick MacMillan and the Friends of Public Art of Keene, marks an important milestone for the city's cultural scene, reaffirming its dedication to public art and community involvement. As outlined in the 2010 master plan, public art plays a vital role in the city's long-term goal to enhance its beauty. Christopher Curtis, a well-known sculptor from Waterbury, Vt., is recognized for his innovative use of stone, steel and light to create pieces that reflect natural and human-made rhythms. "Thought Cage" is designed to promote reflection and conversation while showcasing the natural beauty of Ashuelot River Park. "This installation represents more than a single sculpture; it's the beginning of a public art sculpture trail in the Monadnock Region, with Keene as the cornerstone," said Rick MacMillan, the project organizer. "We are excited to work with Christopher Curtis and to bring this kind of creative energy into our community spaces." The unveiling not only celebrates Curtis' artistic vision but also inspires future projects. "I'm honored to contribute to Keene's creative spirit," said Georgia Cassimatis of Friends of Public Art. "I hope that the sculpture encourages people to pause, enjoy beauty and reconnect with both art and nature."
