Hiya, Readers! Lately, my heart has been overflowing with nostalgia. There is no other season that brings me more happiness than autumn! The brisk air, the crunchy leaves beneath my feet that blanket New England like confetti, pumpkin everything, home cooked meals, books and movie nights. As a little girl, that instant I spotted the first reddish leaf on the ground, I would be filled with excitement for all those fall moments and adventures that I knew were coming. One particular adventure that still keeps me awake with anticipation is my annual trip to Salem, Mass., one of my most treasured destinations. I revel in the stroll down the cobblestone-and-brick street in downtown Salem and the quietness of The Burying Point, the oldest burial ground in Salem. There has always been something about The Witch City that has captivated me like no other place: the controversial history, the vibrant tourist scene, and the cherished memories of holding my grandmother's soft, papery-hand as we walked the historic "red line," indulging in flavored popcorn while admiring the over-the-top costumes in October. Growing up, my family didn't have a lot of money. Whatever we had, we transformed into our own holiday decorations and costumes. I didn't mind sporting my dad's flannel shirt stuffed with a pillow, dirt on my face as a beard, and a handkerchief tied to a stick resting over my shoulder like a fishing pole for Halloween. Our windows showcased hand-cut paper pumpkins, colorful ghosts, and bats in October that my siblings and I had drawn. In November we had leaves and turkeys, and in December, snowflakes, angels, and snowmen! Our Christmas tree had paper-ringed garland and strings of stale popcorn. It wasn't fancy, but I still believe we had the finest decorations on our street! I have carried on with the simple traditions that brought me such joy as a child with my children and now with my grandchildren. I love how each has looked forward to brainstorming seasonal crafts, recipes — and books to read and movies to watch! I can't count how many times I've read "The Cat in The Hat," or Goodnight Moon," and how many times I've seen "Hocus Pocus," since its release in 1993, or "Casper." Even now, no matter what the occasion, I continue recycling anything I can! It's not unusual to see me wearing a witch hat or cape in the winter or hanging Christmas lights in the summer. Life is about collecting those magical moments that fill you with joy — moments that make you smile, laugh, and feel deep excitement for what's next. What holiday or time of year do you love most? How will you be collecting your moments? Do you plop back in fresh snow to make angels? What books are stacked ready to read, and what movies will be ritually seen? As a children's book author, I seldom mention my own work here. It's been my deep-rooted goal over the last 20-years of writing columns to highlight other authors or artists to allow each an opportunity to shine. However, one of my newer releases aligns perfectly with this theme, and I felt it was important to share. "More Magic," is a children's book I wrote that is special to me. It explores crafts that coincide with holidays and cultural celebrations; ones I've crafted with my children and grandchildren. In the book, children can learn how to make masks, corn husk dolls, dream catchers, bird feeders, and so much more! Vividly illustrated and brought to life by artist Alex Goubar, "More Magic," is suitable for ages 4 to 10 (and anyone who would like to learn more about traditions around the world).
