Passion Spills in Peterborough Players "Dial M for Murder"

The Peterborough Players are soaring into summer with the high-flying comedy "Boeing Boeing," wrapping up a lively start to their 2025 season. With laughter still echoing through the historic barn theatre, audiences can now prepare for a shift in tone as the classic thriller, "Dial M for Murder," takes center stage next. Artistic Director Brendon Fox has curated this season with intentional variety, offering what he describes as "an eclectic menu" of theatrical experiences. With five distinct productions spanning comedy, suspense, heart and humor, the Players promise audiences a rich and dynamic journey. Directed by Laura Kepley, "Dial M for Murder," is a sharp, suspenseful adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher of the 1950s Frederick Knott play that inspired Hitchcock's iconic film. "He has done a great job telescoping the story," explained Fox. In this version, Tony suspects his wife, Margot, of infidelity — but here, her former lover is a woman. "In the 1950s this was even more challenging, to navigate those kinds of relationships," Fox noted. What follows is a tangled web of malice, manipulation and murder, designed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, wondering whether good will ultimately triumph over evil. Performances of "Dial M for Murder," run July 2 through 13, with evening shows at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 4 p.m. Sunday matinees. Tickets are $60. The 2025 season will really showcase the versatility of the Players' talented acting ensemble. "We can have three of the actors in "Boeing Boeing," doing something totally different in, "Dial M for Murder." If people see these two shows back-to-back, they will be astonished with the range of these chameleons. It really covers the gamut that way," said Fox. When planning the season, Fox focused on themes of connection and community. "We live in intense times, and one of the things theater can do is highlight empathy and connection and common ground. I wanted to highlight ways we can connect better to each other." That thread continues with "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," running July 16 through 27. This heartfelt musical follows teenagers competing in a spelling bee — but it's ultimately about the unexpected bonds they form. "It is funny and heartfelt," Fox said, adding that for each performance four audience members will be able to volunteer to participate in the competition. Next up is "Native Gardens," from July 30 to August 10, a sharp comedy that asks what it really means to be a good neighbor. When two couples living side by side discover a property line dispute, tension — and humor — ensue. Rounding out the season is "Hay Fever," running August 13 through 24, a classic comedy about an over-the-top, unfiltered artist family. Fox likes to compare it to "Schitt's Creek" and "Arrested Development," but with great wardrobes. "We have got a great mix of classics, contemporary work and a great musical that has so much heart," said Fox. A key part of the Peterborough Players' mission is education. "A major aspect (are) our apprentices. This year, the Core Company is a fantastic group of 14, from all over the country," explained Fox. "They work so hard, are learning a lot, having fun and getting a chance to experience five very different shows.
