Celebrating 150 Years of Compassion

As we usher in the new year, Monadnock Humane Society (MHS) is excited to celebrate a monumental milestone — 150 years of making a lasting impact in the Monadnock Region! Since our founding in 1875, MHS has been a beacon of compassion, providing care and advocacy for countless animals in need. What began as a small, passionate group rescuing animals from cruelty has since grown into a dynamic organization with a broad mission. Today, we not only focus on rescue and rehoming but also offer vital community outreach, education, and programs that strengthen the bond between animals and humans. This anniversary is a tribute to the unwavering support of the community, whose generosity has fueled our growth and success. As we look back on our history, we are deeply humbled by the many lives — both animal and human — that we've touched and transformed. Over the past 150 years, MHS has been at the forefront of animal welfare in our region, continuously evolving to meet the needs of pets and families. From providing emergency medical care to animals in dire conditions to supporting families in crisis through our Animal Safety Net program to facilitating life-changing adoptions, MHS has remained a steadfast presence. Our programs — like low-cost spay/neuter services and wellness clinics, a Pet Food Pantry for local families in need and behavioral consultations and courses through our Guinane Training Center — have been lifelines for countless animals, giving them a second chance at happiness. These efforts, alongside our partnerships with local organizations, allow us to stay true to our mission: to strengthen the animal-human bond by promoting the well-being of animals in the Monadnock Region and beyond. The story of Monadnock Humane Society begins with Jennie B. Powers, who, while helping women and children, saw the pressing need to protect animals from cruelty and neglect. In 1875, driven by her compassion and vision, Powers and a group of concerned citizens in Keene, founded the Keene Humane Society. At a time when many adhered to harsh views of "natural selection," these founders advocated for humane treatment, not only of people — especially women and children — but also of animals. Over the years, MHS has remained steadfast in its core commitment to alleviating suffering and protecting those in need. As the Monadnock Region grew, so did the challenges. By the mid-20th century, animal overpopulation became a significant concern, with stray dogs and feral cats on the rise. In 1967, MHS responded by opening the Jennie B. Powers Memorial Shelter in Swanzey, marking a pivotal moment in our history. This new facility allowed us to expand services, and in 1970, our name was changed to Monadnock Region Humane Society to reflect our growing mission. By the 1990s, as animals were increasingly seen as cherished companions rather than possessions, MHS recognized the need for a more modern facility. In 2000, we moved into our current building, a state-of-the-art, 23,000-square-foot facility built by members of our community, situated on over 90 acres of open space. This space enables us to address the specific needs of animals and people in the communities we serve, providing a caring, safe haven for homeless animals, a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and a 1,700-square-foot, state-of-the-art training center. The facility also features an award-winning boarding, daycare and puppy play school center, as well as beautifully manicured grounds and trails. Today, MHS remains a beacon of hope and compassion, and we can't go without mentioning our incredible volunteers. They are at the heart of everything we do, helping with everything from washing dishes and walking dogs to serving and educating the community. They work alongside staff and supporters, strengthening the bond between animals and their human companions. Their tireless efforts ensure that no animal in need is ever left behind. The commitment and compassion of our volunteers are integral to our mission and help us continue to make a lasting impact. As we celebrate our 150th anniversary, it is clear that MHS has become more than just a shelter. It is a vital pillar of the community, positively impacting the lives of animals and people across 42 towns and cities — and beyond. We continue to provide life-saving assistance, strengthen the human-animal bond and ensure no one faces hardship alone.
