Planning a holiday photo shoot could easily be a chore … but why not make it a memorable and even fun activity for you and your family? Some local photographers offer tips for creating that perfect card for everyone on your mailing list, and an experience that will have everyone in anticipation to smile for the camera and shout "Happy Holidays!" next December. Before hiring a photographer, it's a good idea to take the time to explore the photographer's work and style on their website and/or social media accounts. Don't hesitate to ask questions to ensure you're on the same page and get the best possible photos. Don't procrastinate when it comes to planning your family photo shoot. Scheduling your session well in advance of the holiday rush if possible is best. October can be a great choice. Once you have a date in mind, it's important to think about the location. What kind of atmosphere are you aiming for? Selecting the right location is crucial for a successful photo shoot. Look for a place that resonates with your family's personality and activities. Whether it's an at-home session with a pancake party or an outdoor adventure, limit distractions to get the best shots. Consider your children's moods when choosing the time of day for the shoot. Soft, natural light is ideal for photos, so early mornings or the "golden hour" before sunset are great choices. Whether it's an outdoor, indoor, funny, or classic theme, having a specific photo location in mind will help you decide what outfits to wear. Erin Adams of Surry, owner of LittleFoto, says it's important to choose comfortable outfits in which you all feel your best. Beyond that, photographers agree it's best to aim for a cohesive look without everyone wearing identical clothes. Adams loves a bold pop of color, however, but urges families to choose an outfit that isn't too patterned or "busy." "It distracts from the emotions on your family's faces," she said. "My favorite holiday color choices are emerald, burgundy, browns, creams, and even navy and mustard. Think about where you are going to hang your photos in your home, and choose your outfit colors based off of that room decor. If you are unsure, neutrals are always a good timeless option." At the same time, she also suggests adding texture. Mix in clothing like furry vests, textured dresses, layers, and scarves to bring depth and visual interest. Photographer Lee Germeroth, of Dover, recommends to his clients they have outfits that go well together, but tells them matching entirely is up to them and their preference. "Clothing can be very personal and an expression of their own personalities and creativity," he said. As far as colors to choose, he went on, "those should match the scene, so not super dark that blends into the shadows, for example." Emily Esslinger, head of Golden Aura Photography, tells her clients to steer clear of clothing with logos; and wear something seasonally-appropriate. "If you're taking holiday photos in the month of October or November, it will be chilly so it's best to wear long sleeves for the whole family," she said. "However, it's also not the greatest photo if people are wearing big winter coats. Layering with cute vests, sweaters, et cetera looks beautiful and not distracting." For women, choosing clothing that moves is a big win. "Flowy dresses or skirts are always a favorite part of the outfit plan," said Esslinger. "I have a client closet where I've purchased dresses for the women to have access to for their shoot so they can feel beautiful wearing an expensive dress that is guaranteed to photograph well and they don't have to spend the money on it only to wear it once." Other details to remember when planning a holiday photo shoot is making sure everyone's well-fed and hydrated before the shoot. Avoid cranky kids and adults by ensuring everyone has eaten and taken a trip to the restroom before the photographer arrives. This way, you can make the most of your limited time with the photographer. Be prepared with toys and snacks, especially if you have younger children. They can help keep kids engaged and happy during the photo session. In today's age of Instagram and its focus on perfection, remember that the best family photos come from capturing genuine, imperfect moments. Those in-between times, filled with laughter, wiggles, and even the occasional tear, showcase your family's unique dynamics and create memorable images. "The most important thing during my photo sessions is to relax and have fun," said Adams. "I want to capture the joy and love within your family … and document who they are at this moment in time from an artistic perspective. The more comfortable you act and feel, the more they will respond with happiness for my camera and the best way I can do that is for you to simply just play with your children; interact with them the way you naturally would; laugh with them; love on them, tickle them — you know what makes them happy." My photo sessions are all about capturing the raw emotion between children and their parents, because energy is contagious, and children can feel it. If you show up happy and in good spirits, your children will too."
